Theorist Name: Linda Gottfredson Time Frame: 1981 Theorist's Definition: Linda Gottfredson developed her career theory of Circumscription and Compromise. Gottfredson's theory assumes that we build a cognitive map of occupations based on occupational stereotypes that we pick up from those around us.
Circumscription and compromise deal with the processes by which occupational aspirations are developed and sacrificed. Also described is the progressive and usually permanent circumscription of occupational preferences according to one's developing self-concepts. Four stages of development of self-concept and preferences are proposed: orientation to size and power (ages 3–5 yrs), orientation to sex roles (ages 6–8 yrs), orientation to social valuation (ages 9–23 yrs), and orientation to the internal, unique self (age 14 yrs). The theory of circumscription and compromise focuses on how young people gradually come to recognize and deal with, or fail to deal with, the array of vocational choices their society provides.
